Oh, I'd love to see a Pay as You Go iPhone! It might happen, but not for a long, long time. I was in the O2 store this Sunday picking up an N95 8GB for my wife, a good 10 people were messing around with the iPhones over the course of about 30 minutes. It certainly has the public's interest, it's just not done (in the UK at least) to pay any more that £99 for a mobile on a contract. Surely Apple can address this problem somehow? Perhaps a simple buy back scheme would work...

...for example, you might be able to purchase the iPhone for £199 with the promise from Apple that they'll either buy it back from you in 18 months time for £99, or they'll upgrade you to the latest iPhone for £99. That way you're always getting the iPhone for just £99 and it will keep the iPhone from encroaching into iPod Touch territory too much.

Come on Steve (Jobs), why not try it!!
