MMS sending coming to your O2 iPhone

I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this before. A little while ago, Ross McKillop developed O2 MMS, which enabled you to read multimedia messages on your iPhone, without going through O2’s torturous non-iPhone friendly website. It’s a donation-supported service with no jailbreak required, and is listed on Apple’s Web Apps directory.

Following O2’s fix to their lax MMS security, Ross had to re-design the site. The full details are posted at in this support forum post.

O2 MMS has now been re-launched at a new URL – o2mms.net. The webapp feels much quicker than before, and has a load of new features on the way, namely:

  • viewing of video messages
  • automatic MMS to email (probably)
  • and the biggie – sending MMS

Yes, finally, I can send picture messages from my iPhone! I know there is already a jailbreak solution in form of SwirlyMMS, but that’s unlikely to ever make it to the App Store.

This is an elegant solution to an element missing from the iPhone OS, even though it is only going to be of use to those with an O2 iPhone. Right now it’s a webapp, but Ross also has plans to develop a native application. In fact, he’d like a hand with this, so if you have any experience with Objective C or the iPhone SDk, then drop him a line at [email protected].

In my opinion, O2 should come to an agreement and roll this service out to all their customers, as a free feature unique to their UK iPhones. It would cost them little and add on one more thing that may prevent a customer from buying an iPhone. However, I think they’re unlikely to do anything quite so progressive.

I’m on the beta-test for the new features, and will keep you posted on the launch.
