O2 opens WAP pages to iPhone customers

Tip of the hat to reader Gerry for this one. Previously, I posted that you can retrieve your O2 account balance by sending a blank text to 21202. This sends back a text with your remaining minutes and text until your next billing date. It also sends back a WAP link to your account balance page. This was inaccessible to iPhone users, as Mobile Safari is not WAP-capable.

Now, it appears that O2 have made that link accessible.

If you’re an O2 customer, try clicking this link (when viewing this page in Safari on the iPhone):

http://wap.o2.co.uk/mybalance

You can view your total and remaining allowances, and any charges since the last bill. It’s much the same as sending a text to 21202, but you may prefer to do it this way.

o2-wapNot only that, I tried http://wap.o2.co.uk in Mobile Safari, and it seems that O2 have opened up all their WAP pages to iPhone customers. They are not perfectly formatted for the iPhone, but a quick double-tap and the zooming takes care of that.

Personally, I can’t see myself really using O2’s WAP pages much, but they are quite mobile-friendly and load quickly. This could be useful where your 3G connection is poor. But it’s Friday, and I don’t really need 3G in the pub :)

Try it with wifi turned off – I think you have to be on O2’s data network. It works for me that way.
