I find you have to get the red line of the scanner fairly spot on. However, even if that fails, having a barcode look-up while in the shops is pretty handy :)

Snap a barcode and the app will wisk you off to Amazon to buy it. Obviously within limitations (books, CD/DVD, electronics etc). It won’t help you buy multivitamins from Holland & Barrett. But it found a Finding Nemo DVD and a Micromark Smoke Alarm to give an idea.

Pretty neat (and free).

How did you manage the deconvolution? I’m downloading it now, and will try it out tomorrow.

Thanks for the nice review of barcode scanning.
There is now an iPhone app that scans UPC on the iPhone: pic2shop
See http://www.pic2shop.com for some info and iTunes link, and this short YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo2aaq_l4bM
You need a steady hand to get a usable image given the limitations of the iPhone camera, but it works (and will keep improving in future versions).
All comments and suggestions are very welcome!
-Benoit
