I don't know. Tesco are at the more budget end of the market, but £60/month would qualify for a decent upgrade preference in my book.

One thing that is unclear to me, is whether or not tesco will offer free or highly subsidised upgrades after the contract is up, as most carriers do. Anyone have any ideas on that?

Hard to say what's best as that'll depend on his requirements, but you could stay with O2 and get a SIM-only tariff. If he signs up for 12 months, he can get 800 mins, 1600 texts and Unlimited Data for just under £20/month. Or on a one-month rolling contract, it's the same money for 600 mins/1200 texts/unlimited data. Either way, that's a pretty good deal IMHO. Try http://shop.o2.co.uk/simplicity

Cheers

Am about to come out of iPhone 18 month O2 contract and want to let my son have the old iPhone. What's the best/cheapest way?

KR,

Forgot to mention that O2's data network in around London has been fairly rubbish in the last 6 months. I'm about to switch from my O2 3GS to Vodafone in a few weeks. No point having unlimited data that doesn't work half the time. Vodafone isn't perfect but their HSDPA network is more dependeable.
